FAQ

Are these groups right for me?

These groups are for parents of kids/teens with various behavioral challenges. Here are some reasons why you might sign up:

What happens in a session?

Work with a therapist and fellow parents to learn, practice, and apply strategies for managing your child’s behavior and supporting their growth and success!

Each session focuses on a different topic and skill.

Skills are geared towards helping children with behavioral challenges.

Usually, the group will discuss the new skill and how to apply it, then practice it in an activity together.

You may watch and analyze videos of parenting situations, or do role-plays together with other parents.

We also provide helpful handouts and regular homework assignments to help practice your skills throughout the week.

How much does the group cost?

The cost will depend on your insurance. Click here to learn more!

Are the in-person or Zoom groups different?

The short answer is no! They cover the same material.

We find the in-person groups are most engaging. Some activities such as role-plays are easier to do in-person.

On the other hand, our Zoom groups are more convenient since they don't require driving to our clinic.

We offer both formats so parents can choose the best option for them!

🙋In-Person Option

A reminder email will be sent out the day prior to your session with directions to our clinic site. Visitor parking is available! We ask that parents arrive a bit early to check in. The in-person option is a great way to meet your fellow parents and get the most out of group!

💻Zoom Option

A reminder email will be sent out the day prior to your session with your zoom link so you're ready to go. We ask that all parents have their cameras on so that we can connect and collaborate. This is a great option for our busy parents!

Where can I park?

There is parking directly under the building! The clinic is on the 2nd floor.

To park under the building, click the QR code here.

Use coupon code "SDSYC2" when checking out and the fee will be waived!

Cell service can be spotty in the clinic - note that you can pay for parking ahead of time through the app!

Do you offer 1-on-1 therapy?

Unfortunately, at this time, we are not providing 1-on-1 therapy. We are running group therapy as it allows the provider to help the most people at once.

However, parents who complete a group can schedule a 1-on-1 follow-up visit for personalized attention.

Can more than one parent attend the group?

Yes! As many caregivers as you like are welcome to attend the same group. The amount billed to your insurance will remain the same whether 1, 2, or more caregivers attend.

How do I enroll?

Currently, you must be referred by a provider within UCSD Health to enroll in our groups. Ask your provider to place a referral to Dr. William Pelham in the Child/Teen Psychiatry Clinic
